Comic Expo: addendum and etcetera

Whoops! Almost forgot I had this in my Drafts. So, here we go; a few things to add and… etc

Lessons learned

Hmm. Don’t eat loads of chocolate cookies about a week before a dental visit? That’s common sense, surely… alright, slightly more important stuff:

1) Colouring is popular, but colouring takes time. Pre-show we hoped we’d be able to get a sketch coloured in a little longer than it takes to initially get sketched – maybe 30 minutes. It was closer to an hour. I don’t actually want it to be any less, really, because that hour yielded some amazing results. But, it also meant that Kat and Jason experienced the mad rush of getting a lot of stuff done, and ended up still present in the hall finishing off final colours after everyone else (bar us) had gone home. So next time; less colours in the queue (and possibly… I’m afraid… a price increase).

2) You (our customers) have your budget, and you’re going to spend it. So there. Basically increasing the minimum-asked-for donation did bugger-all to affect how much money we raised, which is great. In fact it did exactly what we wanted; it reduced the pressure on the artists while still raising loads of cash. So that was all win.

3) Tom-Toms are really handy. Although I’m still taking a map.

4) We still can’t move sketch cards. The £10 price gap between a £5 sketch card (a headshot of your character – or anything else – on a trading card sized.. card) and a £15 full-body A4 sketch doesn’t seem to phase most people. This has been the case for a year. Ain’t giving up on the buggers though.

5) Having three of us able to drive is really, really nice. Just felt so much more relaxed, both there and back. Fantastic.

6) Video to promote our games is good… but it’s not doing the job. We sold a decent amount of stuff but we didn’t sell what I wanted to. Next year, we’ll be more focused and we’re going to push specific products harder. It’s a comics show – I should be able to sell City of Heroes/Villains. (Thinks: may even do a playable demo PC again.)

7) Having Mat there to take photos is also really good. Even if he does eat all* the cake.

8 ) Restaurant finds: The Raj does a pretty decent Indian, although that basement got a bit hot ‘n’ stuffy. The Cathay Rendevous was pretty damn fine Chinese, too, and good for comic-celeb-spotting. (You have no idea how handy it’ll be next year for me to have written that down.)

9) There is simply no point in taking swimming trunks to that hotel, I never have time… but I know I will again.

10) Having said that, we need to book a cheaper hotel earlier if we’re going to save cash. Although two years in our current location has given me the taste for luxury, dammit.

11) Can’t get away with anything less than a standard-sized Transit-style van, now. Too much merchandise and just too much stuff. Although I shouldn’t panic so much that it won’t all fit.

12) Plastic tubs are the best for storing stock and merch. We bought a few to hold our stock, which were fantastic; easy to stack, easy to move, didn’t rip, and best of all… you could see what was in them. Next year, the van will be entirely full of them, I’m thinking.

13) Shorts for the win! If the forecast is as hot next time… essential.

14) Might need to look at getting a fan for the stand. I saw a solar-powered fan yesterday. That would be perfect, considering our hefty power-drain. It’s the combination of too many people and too much equipment pumping out heat.

15) We need a minimum of three stands’ worth of space. We were officially supposed to be smaller this year than last. Ha!

16) The cafe on-site does pretty good sandwiches (win!) but doesn’t do receipts (fail).

17) Don’t forget COH t-shirts at a COH-friendly show. Grrrrrr.

Update: I forgot one.

18) We have so many regular visitors we have to seriously think about paying (paying!) for more stand space just so they can sit down. This will probably happen at Memorabilia.

Etcetera

I found a few links to blogs and so on that talked about the show, which you might want to have a gander at. One even mentioned here, so it’s only fair to link on back.

DownTheTubes was the site that mentioned us, and has a good round-up of other reports.

Comic Bits Online also had a good report.

Finally, if I haven’t mentioned them already… I met a couple of comics podcasters in person during the show, and if you’re a fan you should give them a listen. So click away and send a referral link to Geek Syndicate (Hi Barry!) and Birds of Geek (Hi Amy!).

Absolutely finally

… because I don’t think I did ever mention it here; we raised £1,666 for Draw the World Together / EveryChild. That’s officially ‘up’ by about £200 on last year (I think; figures are at work) but as last year included a fluke £200 auction bid, I personally see it as being more like £400 more. So thank you, thank you, to everyone who gave us cash.

Now get back to playing Issue 12. I haven’t even hit the servers yet.

* Well not all. But those were very large pieces.

*nods* yep, they were big pieces of cake, but everyone seemed to like it! :D

I have to admit that I’ve never much seen the point of the sketch cards as an item. An A4 sketch you can frame and looks great. A sketch card just doesn’t lend itself to that kind of proud display in my book. *shrugs* Maybe go for A5 head & shoulders sketches instead? At least at that size a punter can get a couple in a frame but it’s still a bit quicker for the artist than a full body…

Wished I’d caught the UK Comics Podcasting panels at Bristol, as I’ve gotten into Geek Syndicate, Birds of Geek, Comic Racks, Q!PAW and other similar podcasts since the show… Meeting “The Nuge” would have been ace! Ahhh well, maybe at BICS.

Next year I am *definately* finding a nice, mid-price hotel for the weekend and booking early… Maybe in July or something! :P

    3) Sometimes, Rockjaw. Sometimes. Me and Hikari were using a TomTom for navigation. It thought we were driving through buildings at one point. It wanted to send us the wrong way down a one way street at other points. And trying to use it to direct us to Nando’s? It decided we had to work for our delicious spicy chicken, and sent us up every single hill and slope in Bristol.

    4) Well, come on! If you had a choice about spending a little less for a sketchcard, or a little more for an A4 sketch, what would you get? Though… I could try and get a complete sketchcard set of the Rolando Family…

    6) Maybe load a few more videos onto repeat, and steal another monitor if possible? Of course, there is the issue of where to put the other monitor, as I’d suggest near where Chris was sitting… Maybe invite a few players to your team and get them to hand out flyers/trial CD’s? And I did notice the only mention of NCSoft in the Expo book was near the back and soley Draw the World Together based.

    13) Who likes short shorts? Apparently you guys, though thankfully the shorts were of a respectable length.

    14) Or continue hoping for players to provide manual air flow, and maybe get some large palm leaves. I did have a look for a fan with a hand crank to power it that way, but no luck. Carbon footprint be damned.

    16) The dreaded expenses, eh? You might want to try Cafe Gusto just down from the convention center. In fact, I think you did on the Sunday.

    17) Always a good thing. ;) I’d be interested in one myself, but I’m not too fond of the style of the actual shirt.

That’s a hefty amount raised for charity, so woohoo!

I actually have a present for you guys that will solve the restaurant dilemma next year.

Venue magazine, Bristol’s weekly local ‘Time Out’-type publication gives away an excellent eating out guide around March/April. I only thought of it after I came to the Con on Saturday. I’ve got a copy of this years in the flat.

I’ll post it to you nearer the time…!

  4. #4 by Crimson_Archer at May 21st, 2008

Regarding 6)… Well, it’s not like you’re short of a few eager players to play the game on the stand and talk about it for 30 mins at a time, is it? ;)

  5. #5 by Shadowe at May 21st, 2008

    1) Colouring is immensely popular – I’m just sad that I didn’t get more drawn and more coloured.

    2) Even when we *don’t* have a budget, we (and our wives) will spend it! For once I hadn’t set myself a limit on expenses (which is rare), but I don’t think I personally exceeded my normal spend. Pix, on the other hand…

    3) Tom-toms are great, but the new shopping centre in the middle of Bristol means that unless yours has a BANG UP-TO-DATE map, it will be wrong.

    4) Full-body sketch, every time.

    6) Game promotion is a tricky one. The video is… okay. It doesn’t quite tickle me, personally. I think a large part of that is because the sound doesn’t come through. Playable demo-PC with trial-codes (or if you guys can swindle the company out of a full accounts for demo purposes, that would probably work well) would be excellent, and we, your players, would be MORE than happy to provide our able assistance.

    11) I’m waiting to see what you have to cart to Memo.

    13) Yes, it was DAMN hot. I might have to invest in a pair of shorts myself.

    14) Yes. You need a fan for the stand. Your players are very happy to stand there and waft cooling breezes at you and the artists, but a fan would probably help a lot.

    15) HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Sorry. Smaller? I can’t see it, personally. The stand is excellent, and spot on – you might even need to go larger.

    16) Good for food, bad for putting things on the corporate budget. Ah, well, you live and learn.

    17) Heh. Told you.

    6) Just bung the character creation on a screen and let people make stuff ;)

  7. #7 by Rockjaw at May 21st, 2008

Blimey. Comments a-go-go. Lazy list journalism FTW! (Private joke for my brother, there.)

    Let’s see here….

Crimson (and others) re sketchcards: Yeah. I know. We just don’t feel charging any less than £5 would be worth an artist’s time, and making the ‘canvas’ bigger means that it takes them more time to do. We are still amassing a folder of sketchcards which will hopefully, one day, make a great auction item. We’ll see. That reminds me… another post.

Zortel: I think we only got a small mention in the Con book because we passed on the advert this year. I was happy with foot traffic on Saturday, but Sunday was quiet. I think your idea of another Sidekick Squad might happen next time. At least it’ll give you guys something to do. ;)

Mystie: Ta mate! I was gutted that Mexican place (er, that should actually be That Mexican Place, as that was that Mexican place’s name) was closed. Always do appreciate recommendations. Anyone know a ‘definitively’ good curry house in B’rum?

Regarding demo PCs… they’re a quandary. Take up a lot of space. Need to be paid attention to. Attract small children and other ‘lurkers’ like flies. We’ve used them and not been convinced of their value quite a few times. Hence our decision to reduce them and often replace them with live demos (like at Memorabilia). Still… I will look into it for next year’s Bristol.

An interesting acid test is going to be UK Games Expo. No demo PCs, unlike last year. If sales are down and footfall is similar, I’m going to attribute it to that.

Shadowe: Stop gloating. ;) And Memorabilia needs a ‘long wheelbase’ Transit, plus a full MiniBus. It’s full-on. Next year’s MiniCon, I think, will require some sort of ten-wheeler.

  8. #8 by Shadowe at May 21st, 2008

Consider the gloating ended. Until Brum.

    Further thoughts on demo-PCs.

I can see that they will take up a lot of space at the stand – heck, thinking about how crowded things were at Bristol, there’s basically nowhere you could have fit one. Live demos are a good thing – I think it worked well at Memo. Part of me thinks that a higher cycle-time on games might not be a bad thing, though – get through each game each day.

Another part of me thinks that having somewhere to park a prospective player, and walk them through character creation (okay, in CoH that might take a couple of hours), then get them playing for a while, could spurr people into buying the games.

Guess it all comes down to a cost-effectiveness analysis: Does the space taken up by a PC for demos justify sales? In which case Birmingham should prove the point.

  9. #9 by Rockjaw at May 21st, 2008

“Does the space taken up by a PC for demos justify sales? In which case Birmingham should prove the point.”

Precisely. Although you can never be 100 percent sure; there’s always plenty of factors that influence. I would say not having the facility to take an interested customer through a game is maybe not so good.

Reminds me of Collectormania last year. Very small stand, but we fitted two PCs for demo’ing on there. Worked well.

Part of the issue is of course DTWT! Artists PCs plus various schtuff. All takes up precious (costly) space.

  10. #10 by Rockjaw at May 21st, 2008

I added another point to the list above, which I think most/all of you will appreciate. ;)

  11. #11 by Crimson_Archer at May 21st, 2008

Regarding 18)… Ooohhhh, does this mean we get our own NCSoft cafe area? With cake? ;)

  12. #12 by Zortel at May 21st, 2008

If you want to justify having seating for us, put up a big sign pointing at us saying “Meet the Players” and we can frantically, if with excessive fervour, convince people to play the games. I’m always happy to speak to people, even though as a person with Panic and Anxiety Disorder, it should terrify me. ;)

  13. #13 by Shadowe at May 21st, 2008

    18) “Ooh, me achin’ feet!” was my most common complaint after Saturday at Bristol, even with nicking a seat behind the stand a couple of times, and fairly frequently popping outside for a smoke (and the accompanying sit down).

One thing I will say, of course, is that we, your ‘regulars’ are (hopefully) one of your best tools for plugging your games (certainly CoX, and I’m sure Gangrel will pipe up about TR at some point) – don’t be afraid to point us out to people and say “Well, that chap there’s been playing the game for three years, you can ask him how much he loves it.” I may not be that good at talking to strangers, but I’m more than happy to waffle on about one of my favourite hobbies (and certainly the hobby that over the last three years has had the greatest amount of play-time. 2700 hours on my main alone? Two accounts FULL of characters on one of the servers (well, they were full before I12)? That’s a LOT of time played). I’m pretty sure that most of us would happily do the same.

  14. #14 by Rockjaw at May 21st, 2008

“… If you want to justify having seating for us, put up a big sign pointing at us saying “Meet the Players”

Why does that give me an image of a big cage with another sign hanging off it saying ‘Do not feed’? ;)

  15. #15 by Shadowe at May 21st, 2008

I’ll assume that means you’re prepared to feed us? Or at least feed us cookies and gingerbread. Or Jamaican gingercake. Or Bourbon Creams. Or Cream Cakes. Or Chocolate Cakes. Or Chocolate Muffins. Some people might even like Blueberry Muffins.

I think we can safely sit in the cage and go “Oook!” lots.

  16. #16 by Mystie at May 21st, 2008

…but the cake is a lie.

    (Sorry had to be done)

  17. #17 by Gangrel at May 21st, 2008

I am always willing to show up to help out… just point the way (finances withstanding ;) )

Which reminds me, next weekend isnt it for memorabilia? Anyone have crash space available? :D

  18. #18 by Rockjaw at May 21st, 2008

No, next weekend is UK Games Expo… Memorabilia’s in November.

(Although it’s sort of tempting to send you on a wild goose chase to the NEC.)

  19. #19 by Shuttler at May 21st, 2008

Birds of Geek have been in my itunes list for some time, they are so commited to the cause it’s brilliant!

A little not on the sketch cards, I didnt know they exisited! So this is either because they were not offered or I didnt look properly, I’ll leave that up to you to work out, but I do recall when I asked for a sketch someone saying ‘You want a full size one yes?’ hooray for the assumptive close ;)

  20. #20 by Gangrel at May 21st, 2008

Rockjaw said “No, next weekend is UK Games Expo… Memorabilia’s in November.

(Although it’s sort of tempting to send you on a wild goose chase to the NEC.)”

Well, they are both in Birmingham arent they? Might just pop down for the day… finances withstanding ;)

  21. #21 by Rockjaw at May 21st, 2008

Shuttler, we didn’t do sketch cards at the MiniCon because frankly we didn’t think anyone would want them. There were signs at Bristol though.

Gangrel – you’re in the right city. ;) Although don’t forget it’s Edgbaston for UK Games Expo, so sort of a suburb…

  22. #22 by snapshot at May 22nd, 2008

    I can’t believe no one’s made a comment about No. 7!
(Not that i’m an ego maniac or anything).

I’d like you all to know that i appreciated some of you posing for photos, and (hopefully) now that i’ve got to know you all better and you’ve all got used to me sticking my camera in your faces, there will be bigger and better shots to come!

Did i hear someone say “Press Pass”?

  23. #23 by Gangrel at May 22nd, 2008

Only if i can get one ;)
