Tropic Blunder: the pics

I know I ‘owe’ you a post about the event, but honestly… I don’t know if I want to talk about it. Suffice to say, many old faces were present, many drinks were drunk (but not that many) and good times were had.

In other words, everything I loved about my job, encapsulated in one evening and one very early morning.

To ensure this isn’t a complete loss for those of you who couldn’t make it though, I’ve made a Flickr set (which incidentally, resides on my newly minted ‘Pro’ account, so you can expect more images to make their way online over time).

Enjoy. Back soon.

UK Games Expo 2008… in one post

Yes, so this is three months late. It’s been written in fits and starts. When (if) you get to the end, you might understand a little about the delay. Enjoy.

Let’s start with a quick recap of…

Friday 30th May

Just two weeks after our last VanQuest we were off again, feeling a distinct sense of déja vu as we assembled at the car hire place, packed the van and ended up at Oxford Services for lunch. I find it slightly worrying that I’ve considered - twice - getting a ‘Frequent Customer’ card at the coffee place there.

A series of unexplained slowdowns on the M25 delayed us a bit, but apart from that we made good time, pulling into the Clarendon Suites’ car park before 5pm. Then it was a quick and easy unload, followed by a stress-free setup, the only slight kink being that we had to ‘haXX0r’ the wifi password for the venue.

The fact that we could hack it sort of speaks volumes… Read More »

Consider yourself… linked

For some reason I have random lyrics and snippets from Oliver! in my head. Why.

Anyway, set up a new blogroll linking category to cover off a few of you called Playas, ‘cos y’all are. Which led me to checking a few places which leads me to pimpin’ ya out with linkage and quotage. Read More »

Comic Expo… Part 2

Apparently I am an elephant, because an elephant never forgets.

As I dropped off to sleep on Friday I remembered that in the same hotel in 2007, I’d overslept thanks to an alarm call that never came. That lingering knowledge probably kept me half-awake through the night, and I woke a little groggy on Saturday - but on time.

Still. Show to get done. No rest for the wicked… Read More »

Comic Expo… Bristol, 2008

In one two post posts. Not four, unlike the last show. Can’t guarantee to be short, though… so that’ll be like last time.

So, we came (again), we saw (again), we conquered (well that might be debatable but we certainly seemed to do alright, thank you). Another Comic Expo has come and gone. Let’s talk about it, shall we? Okay. With pictures? Oh alright then.

Mystie-eyed reminiscing

Just when I thought I couldn’t possibly come up with any more ‘Mystie’ puns… ah, brain, I love ya.

Yes, the on-off, on-off blog of Mystie (AKA ‘Dave’, as in, “Awright Dave?”) has been updated a few times recently, but most importantly he’s still (still!) recounting his time at the Omega Sektor MiniCon. You thought I took a long time??

Anyway, this time out he’s talking about the rest of his Saturday, and how his TF Omega team managed to blag their way through an entire Task Force! Cheeky buggers. Anyway, feel free to go read and take in some book choices of his along the way, as well as noting his new addiction for Tabula Rasa.

See you next weekend Dave - fancy a TR sketch??

Pushing peeps along

Quick one: I had been meaning to check on Mystie’s blog for a while, and hadn’t until now. Great to see that he wrote up some more of his experiences at the MiniCon:

I don’t do breakfast, but I hear my girlfriend’s voice saying “Make sure you eat properly. I know what you’re like when you get on the computer.” going round my head. I’ve never been this organised in my life.

… but since then, nada. C’mon man! We want to hear all about what else you got up to! Perhaps this will encourage you to finish, eh? (Trust me; I know what it’s like trying to recount that monster….)

While I’ve got you in a reading mood I also wandered over to see if Hazel - one of our trusty Sidekicks - had updated her blog with more of her experiences from the weekend. And lo! She has!

I got to spend all day with Miss Liberty and Ghost widow. How lucky am I?

Answer: very. Go read more.

By the way, according to Haze, I apparently drunk some ‘beer’ over the weekend, possibly in Omega Sektor’s bar. I’d just like to say for the record that this is nothing but a scandalous rumour and probably never happened.

MiniCon Day Three: Sunday

Day Three. Three. Three days. I’m telling you, writing this is almost the same as doing it all over again. Well, not quite.

The big difference between the Ultimate Heroic Weekend (MiniCon, same thing) and any other show we do was simply time. At most shows, we spend an entire day on the show floor, but then with a usually audible sigh of relief (or more likely, cheer of elation) we pack up and go out - or go home.

(The one exception is The Show To End All Shows; the Games Convention in Germany. It’s five days long. Proud monuments stand in the aisles of der Leipziger Messegelände, honoring the booth workers who have fallen there.)

At Omega Sektor though, while we did leave the venue, we never really left the show. So by Day Three… it was starting to wear us down a bit.

Read Mystie for me

Morning! *yawn*

Woke up to find that the blog thing is catching on, to which I can only say good - very good. At this rate… we might end up with several blogs..!

‘Mystie’ is the most recent, AKA Dave, who I think I first met at Bristol Comic Expo last year. He is immortalised on film in this YouTube video:

YouTube Preview Image

You’ll have to watch about 5:55 of me, mostly, before you get to Dave… he’s in this particular film because (I think) his very first time getting a sketch he got an absolute corker from Mike Collins. Lucky so-and-so….

Anyway, back to his blog. Dave’s been talking about his time at Omega Sektor, starting with Friday and a very natural reaction:

Now I’d been talking to ‘Jack’ online for over a year. In fact, I’d been chatting to all the Ancient Legacy people on Vent for a long time. So if I was a bit nervous about meeting one of them, 4 (count ‘em, 1, 2, 3, 4!) was a bit daunting. But drink would be there. Drink is our friend.

Indeed it is. Go read, stop hassling me about the next part of my epic write-up….

MiniCon Day Two: Saturday

I warn you: this post is long. Like, epic long, Task Force long… long. So grab a drink, maybe some popcorn, sit back, relax… and hear the tale of the 2008 Omega Sektor MiniCon, Day Two: Saturday.

Wake up, Rockjaw

Saturday started bleary-eyed in bed, where I woke up at about 6AM with half a hangover and not enough sleep. Both were my own fault, so I couldn’t complain.

I remember lying there in bed savouring the quiet time before I knew I had to get up, when out of the blue, some part of my semi-awake consciousness asked me a question:

“Hey Stephen; can you remember the PIN number for the credit card machine?”

Instantaneous reply: no.

“But if you don’t know the PIN, how are people going to pay for stock, merchandise and/or make charity donations with their credit (and debit) cards, hmmm?”

My eyes snapped open. A cold sweat broke out. Great start to the day.
