Going AWOL

I’ll be a mite busy in the next few hours and days:

  • Today’s all about nailing this damn presentation for my talk on Thursday. It’s almost there, in my mind, and the rest of it will come in the next few hours as long as I keep working on it. Tonight will possibly be more of the same, knowing me.
  • Tomorrow we’re driving to Stafford, which is going to take a while, even with good traffic. I’ve no idea if I’ll have internet access at our hotel either.
  • Thursday and Friday - MMOG-fest. When I’m not watching talks, giving a talk, talking to students, or selling to students, I’ll probably be in the pub doing all of the above.

So back to normal on the weekend. I’ve got a few things stored up - half-done on my post about London MCM Expo, and of course I want to write up the UK Games Expo from this past weekend. In the meantime, talk amongst yourselves. About this, if you like:

Callista, Lillit & Paul by Karl Kopinski

New artist for UK Games Expo

Just got an email from Andrew Wildman confirming another Draw the World Together artist for next weekend’s show… Karl Kopinski, who I met last year at a small one-day show we did in Loughborough.

I’ll let Karl’s work speak for itself…

Karl Kopinski sketch

Yeah. I’m having me some of that.

Karl’s art has appeared most frequently in Games Workshop products, so if you’re any sort of Warhammer fan, I think you’ll like what you see. Plenty more to gorge on over at his site.

Karl’s going to appear on Saturday only, so if you want to get a sketch (and I would suggest, he’ll be best when drawing fantasy-style characters) then you know where to come: UK Games Expo, baby.

Write a Tabula Rasa haiku, win a sketch…!

The latest episode of TabulaCast is now live - and inside it, there’s a competition!

If you’d like to win a sketch of your Tabula Rasa character, all you need to do (’all’ he says, jokingly) is write a haiku relating to, well, Tabula Rasa. If you’re judged the best of the bunch, you’ll win a free sketch from Draw the World Together. And while I’m not saying it’ll look this good, this was the sketch John (AKA ‘Shuttler’) himself got at the recent MiniCon…

… by Mr Andie Tong… you never know.

So if you want to be in with a chance to win, get yourself over to TabulaCast and download Episode 22, or if you haven’t got time to listen you can find the details at John’s Tabula Blogger site, too.

Of course if writing a haiku sounds like too much effort - you can always just come to the Comic Expo and get a sketch yourself!

A picture of innocence

If anything qualifies as a ‘Weird self-portrait’ it’s this. Except, erm, I didn’t do it myself. Oh well:

MiniCon Day Three: Sunday

Day Three. Three. Three days. I’m telling you, writing this is almost the same as doing it all over again. Well, not quite.

The big difference between the Ultimate Heroic Weekend (MiniCon, same thing) and any other show we do was simply time. At most shows, we spend an entire day on the show floor, but then with a usually audible sigh of relief (or more likely, cheer of elation) we pack up and go out - or go home.

(The one exception is The Show To End All Shows; the Games Convention in Germany. It’s five days long. Proud monuments stand in the aisles of der Leipziger Messegelände, honoring the booth workers who have fallen there.)

At Omega Sektor though, while we did leave the venue, we never really left the show. So by Day Three… it was starting to wear us down a bit.

MiniCon Day Two: Saturday

I warn you: this post is long. Like, epic long, Task Force long… long. So grab a drink, maybe some popcorn, sit back, relax… and hear the tale of the 2008 Omega Sektor MiniCon, Day Two: Saturday.

Wake up, Rockjaw

Saturday started bleary-eyed in bed, where I woke up at about 6AM with half a hangover and not enough sleep. Both were my own fault, so I couldn’t complain.

I remember lying there in bed savouring the quiet time before I knew I had to get up, when out of the blue, some part of my semi-awake consciousness asked me a question:

“Hey Stephen; can you remember the PIN number for the credit card machine?”

Instantaneous reply: no.

“But if you don’t know the PIN, how are people going to pay for stock, merchandise and/or make charity donations with their credit (and debit) cards, hmmm?”

My eyes snapped open. A cold sweat broke out. Great start to the day.

Andie Tong and Neil Edwards show off

Two of our Draw the World Together artist friends, Andie Tong and Neil Edwards, have been showing off new stuff on their blogs recently. Andie’s been having ‘fun with markers’ and has been cranking out sketches like this one of Spider-Woman:

Andie Tong - Spider-Woman

That doesn’t do it justice though - go see the full size version on his site, and make sure to check out the other sketches he’s done there recently.
